These sculptures aim to bring a part of our ecosystem that normally exists below our feet to envelop and surround viewers, inviting in a sense of oneness and equilibrium withun the ecological relationships integral to our existence. And Yet, disturbs an anthropogenic space to expand our boundaries of how we relate ourselves to nature.&nbsp; Titled after a line in the poem The World of Dew by Japanese poet Issa, they explore concepts of co-origination, interdependence, symbiosis, and communication in its creation. Mycelium shows the interconnection that is constant in all beings, and challenges the western sense of separateness and superiority that is often held in our interactions with nature. Nature rarely deeply disrupts the spaces we exist in; it is a point of discovery, reset, a new beginning. This sculptural network transforms and intricacies emerge as one explores both inside and out. Viewers may feel displaced from the space they had originally entered, overwhelmed in the way space had been manipulated, then humbled, one, and at peace with what they were experiencing.All beings would be nonexistent without the relationships sustained with those around it, revealing what is at stake in our current ecological crisis. Confronting and being surrounded by these microorganisms is powerful in connecting to, understanding, and ultimately caring for more delicately.&nbsp; In addition, this piece becomes a physical reflection of the artist’s drawing style, taking 2D designs into sculptural incarnations. “If all humankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed 10,000 years ago.” - Edward O. Spruce trees. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; This series is a snapshot of the evergreen trees found in the forests of the Yampa Valley. I am enamored by the subtle details that appear when you explore the personalities of trees and am intrigued by the patterns that reoccur across different organisms in nature. I believe that coming to know the living beings around us intimately will allow us to care for them more intentionally. Additionally, I give a nod to the traditional portraiture practice of the rich and powerful, aiming to recognize our trees as richly intelligent leaders that can guide our world into abundant balance.&nbsp;In the Yampa Valley, our forests range from Pine, Spruce-Fir, Aspen, and Oakland Shrubs. The Lodgepole Pine, Engelmann Spruce, and Subalpine Firs are most widely occurring, with Ponderosa Pines, Blue Spruce, and Douglas Firs mixed in. Focusing on each tree’s bark, I aim to learn the evolved personality of shapes to identify these trees, educate on the makeup of our forests, and bring appreciation to the beauty of barks. From left to right, I chose the intricately layered bark of the Ponderosa Pine, the contrasting bumps and smooth skin of the Subalpine Fir, and the thickly textured Engelmann Spruce. These tree portraits were created from repurposed aluminum cans found along the Yampa River. Magnificent walls of sandstone rise up around you, mystical and powerful in their steady and grounded devotion. In moments like these I feel utterly small, but I never feel separate, different, or apart from the Earth. Rather, I am reminded of my place within the grand workings. When I think of how we must address the ways we’ve harmed our environments and confront the ecological crisis, it is this sense that I return to. We are called as humans to reposition ourselves within the much grander systems of the earth and to reconsider the roles we wish to maintain in nature and societies. I see it in the way the trees and wind move with each other, the way a pollinator finds a flower and a flower attracts a pollinator, and how the Yampa continues to find her way to the Green. It is always and it is constant, on and on and on. Sometimes this is playful, often it is a dance, but it is always what must be done in the way it has to be. We can do the same, by reassessing our relationships with our ecosystems and by listening to them to remember what we must do. I honor Indigenous writers such as Robin Wall Kimmerer, Dr. Kyle Powys White, and Gloria Bird, among many others, in whose words I have learned more deeply the reciprocity in the give and take of life, the reciprocity that we have neglected our responsibility in. And, my father, who taught me that the more you learn about the natural world, the more you become in awe of it. The world asks us all to listen to this reciprocity with awe and to answer with our own deep care given back. The same snow we ski on in the winter melts to become the water we raft and fish on in the summer, the same water that seeps into the soil and sustains our ecosystems and all life. This piece was made in reflection of my favorite memories spent high in Colorado’s mountains, near the headwaters of our greatest rivers that will one day flow to reach the sea, or in hopes that it will again. I find solace in the Yampa’s natural bends and curves, water that moves from high down into the beautiful riparian habitats she sustains, habitats that we can then help keep healthy.
